Liposuction Q & A

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a treatment method that removes fatty deposits to restore the body’s natural contours. Dr. Mitts uses state-of-the-art ultrasonic liposuction, which melts the fat by heating and vibrating the fat cells so they break down. Breaking down the fat cells makes them easier to remove and increases the amount of extractable fat.

Can liposuction remove fat from anywhere on the body?

Liposuction is adaptable for use on most body parts, but is used most frequently to remove fat from:

  • Abdomen
  • Waist
  • Thighs
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Upper arms
  • Back
  • Inner knee
  • Chest
  • Cheeks, chin and neck
  • Calves
  • Ankles

Liposuction may also form a part of other plastic surgeries such as face-lifts and tummy tucks.

What are the advantages of liposuction?

Liposuction is a less invasive procedure than surgery, so the risks and potential complications are fewer. Other advantages are:

  • It can take just one liposuction session to achieve the desired results
  • Dr. Mitts can treat more than one area during a single session
  • Results achieved with liposuction are more consistent than with noninvasive treatment

The ultrasonic technique uses high-pitched sound waves to liquefy the fat before removal, enhancing Dr. Mitts’s ability to remove dense pockets of fat that wouldn’t be accessible using traditional liposuction. Ultrasonic liposuction also simultaneously tightens the skin, making it a preferred treatment option for patients who do not want to undergo multiple surgical procedures.

What happens during the liposuction procedure?

Once your anesthetic takes effect, Dr. Mitts makes small incisions in your skin to reach the fat cells underneath. He applies a local anesthetic solution to reduce bleeding and help prevent tissue trauma, and then inserts a thin tube or cannula into the incisions.

The ultrasonic technique Dr. Mitts uses liquefies the fat cells as he targets them, making it easier to suction the fat out of your body. When he’s removed the optimum quantity of fat, Dr. Mitts sutures the incisions, and the procedure is complete.

You may experience swelling and fluid retention after your liposuction procedure, but this should subside in a few days, after which you can admire your new shape. Dr. Mitts gives you a comprehensive set of guidelines to help you recover and achieve the best results from your surgery, and arranges for you to see him again for a checkup.
